A KIND OF MAGIC: THE HANDICRAFT ARTISTIC CERAMICS MADE BY LA FORNACINA

by Sara Cartelli

Do you remember the magic wardrobe in “Chronicles of Narnia”, through which the three children protagonists were able to access another dimension?

Last week, passing La Fornacina’s door, I experienced the same experience. Come into their lab-house is like experiencing something magical and mystical at the same time, starting with the energy that you breath inside, relaxed and sparkling.

When you meet Tania and Nicola Rigo you understand the why. They are the ones who give soul and shape to this project, they and their incredible passion, you can see and feel it in every small corner. A couple in life and work that has made ceramics of all kinds for over twenty years, from religious to artistic ones, from tableware to home decor accessories, from interior to exterior tiles. Two synergistic spirits who know how to blend their abilities to create something unique.

Their history began in Germany, Tania’s birthplace, where they decided to attend together a ceramics professional institute. From there everything was born, the lab, the house, the family.

From there was born this wonderful great little project that is La Fornacina, creator of handicraft artistic ceramics appreciated not only in Italy, but all over the world.

The thing that strikes most, besides the wonderful environment, is surely see them in action. They handle the clay with a unique dexterity. Everything seems so simple, in a matter of seconds, raw material changes, like magic.

And then, if that’s not enough, there’s also Roger with them. A great big playful dog that contributes with his affection to make everything perfect.

Yes, because La Fornacina is a perfect imperfection, made of sweat, sacrifice, passion and hands. Those hands who are not afraid to get dirty, to experiment.

I can only say you: discover them. Discover their world, their creations, their creativity. I’m sure you will be fascinated.
