The book on the nightstand: The Shark Club

by Ramona Lucarelli

The Muses Hotel,
where I grew up and where I still lived, was not the usual hotel in Palermo …

Ann Kidd Taylor writes The Shark Club and leads us to the Muses Hotel, a small corner of the world on a desolate island in Florida.

This is the Perry grandmother’s hotel, she’s enthusiastic about books and literature.

It is the place that would make any reader happy, where anyone would like to stay!

Book clubs, theme nights, each room is dedicated to a writer, in which is reported a quote, such as the Keats room in which you read Love is my religion. I could die for love.

It is there where Maeve and his twin brother Robin grow up, embraced by Grandma Perry’s affection, after losing their parents in an air crash.

And that’s where Maeve always comes back.

Marine biologist, she runs the world to conduct shark research.

Maeve “has been literally gripped by the object of his obsession.”

It is July 30, 1988 when two events upset her life. She was kissed by Daniel and attacked by a shark.

That aggression does not create in her fear but fascination:

Whatever makes you feel alive deserves your attention.
If it makes you happy, then it’s worth following it.

To make her feel alive, to make her happy are the ocean and the sharks that populate it, with whom she says she feels more comfortable than with people.

Before I was thirty, I had been tormented by the pain of what I had not: Daniel; a son; that lost life without being lived.

After the sharks, Daniel has given her love and pain.

Inseparable as children, they grow up suffering from similar pains: the loss of parents for Maeve, for Daniel the abandonment of his father.

They fall in love, but this love unfolds without roots to remain firm and grow: a vague distance that came to mind when all the commitments and needs were put aside and remained only to them.

When Maeve returns to the Muses Hotel will find Daniel and with him the burden of regret in the room where she lived as a child.

Most of the time we decide for our lives.

Maeve is looking for her happiness.

However, she does not know if she is waiting for it at the Muse Hotel, on the mainland, or if she always had it with her.
