Super Shadows is an illustrated project dedicated to children, that warms the heart of the grown-up.
As a child I wanted to become many people. A princess, a dentist, a veterinarian, Merlin the wizard… It’s something that we all did, fantasize. It was a normal thing. What wasn’t normal was the dream: “we dreamed big.” And no one brought us back with the feet on the ground. We could think of being anything and inside those thoughts we felt strong, big, important. It was our best mask.
Think about it. Could you go back?
It’s so hard, dreams inevitably crash in front of a wall of rationality. And if we don’t break down them by ourselves inevitably comes our mother, father, friend, husband, son to remind us to keep our feet on the ground.
When I dreamed of being Merlin the wizard I really thought to be able to make spells.
That’s the magic of the dream, we can believe it’s true.
This is why I loved Super Shadows from the first moment I saw it. Jason Ratliff illustrations reminds us that in the world of imagination we can be what we want. That all children deserve and can dream. That regardless of race, gender, or physical and mental handicaps, if a child thinks he is Batman, he is Batman. And nobody gets to tell him it’s not true.
Super Shadows is a series of illustrations with children as protagonists – with their shadows. However their shadows are not mere shadows, but the superheroes of our childhood. Captain America, Superman, Batman, Doctor Strange, Wonder Woman… there are pretty much everyone. They are all ready to remind us that the impossible is impossible only if we decide that it is.
If I tickled your curiosity and you want to know more I invite you to click on Jason Ratliff’s website, in case you wish to buy an illustration signed and numbered by the artist you can go to Curioos and choose your favourite one.
